About This Coin
The 1978 Eisenhower Dollar is a United States dollar from the Eisenhower Dollars 1971-1978 series — the final year of the series. In 1978, coins were struck at the San Francisco, Denver, and Philadelphia Mints with a combined mintage of 61.8 million. This ranks 3rd of 6 years by total mintage, below the series median of 70.3 million. The obverse features Dwight D. Eisenhower facing left and the reverse displays an eagle landing on the moon with an olive branch in its talons, commemorating the Apollo 11 lunar landing. The final year of the Eisenhower Dollar before the smaller Susan B. Anthony Dollar replaced it in 1979. Struck in 75% copper, 25% nickel over a pure copper center, weighing 22.7 grams, 38.5 mm in diameter, with a reeded edge. Collectors have identified one known die variety for this date (typical die clash). Produced 5 years after the celebrated 1973 key date. Across its variants, estimated values range from $1 to $7 depending on mint mark, grade, and strike type. A notable auction result reached $8.8K in MS67 grade at eBay. Designed by Frank Gasparro/Michael Collins & James Cooper.
