Description
A proof pattern dollar from 1976, cataloged as Judd J-2163, struck during the Bicentennial coinage program that produced the dual-dated 1776-1976 Eisenhower dollars. This pattern may represent an alternative composition, design variant, or die configuration that was considered but not adopted for production. The Bicentennial dollar program was the largest special-issue coinage effort in American history to that point, with billions of coins struck across three denominations (dollar, half dollar, and quarter), each bearing a unique Bicentennial reverse design selected through a national competition. The Eisenhower dollar versions were struck in both copper-nickel clad (for circulation) and 40% silver clad (for collector sets), and J-2163 may test one of the compositions considered for these strikes or explore a modification to Dennis Williams's Liberty Bell and Moon reverse design. As one of only a handful of Judd-numbered dollar patterns from the Bicentennial era, this piece occupies a significant position in the catalog of modern American experimental coinage.
Rarity Notes
