1976 Proof Dollar Pattern - J-2164
Strike TypeCoin Details
Description
A second proof pattern dollar from the Bicentennial program, distinct from J-2163 in composition, die state, or design detail. The existence of multiple Judd numbers for 1976 dollar patterns indicates that the Mint explored several variations during the Bicentennial coinage development, even though the production program ultimately proceeded with a single obverse (Frank Gasparro's Eisenhower portrait) and single reverse (Dennis Williams's Liberty Bell superimposed on the Moon) design combination. J-2164 may test a different metallic composition — the Bicentennial program used both copper-nickel clad and 40% silver clad for production, and other alloys was evaluated — or may represent a subtle design modification that was considered and rejected before final production dies were prepared. The Bicentennial coinage stands as one of the most ambitious commemorative programs in U.S. Mint history, and patterns from the program document the creative and technical process behind coins that reached virtually every American household.
Rarity Notes
R-8 (Extremely Rare). Like J-2163, this Bicentennial dollar pattern is very scarce in private hands.
