Coin Details
Description
This 1975 yellow bronze medal at 76mm commemorates the Bicentennial of the United States Navy. The Navy was established on October 13, 1775, when the Continental Congress authorized the acquisition of two armed vessels to intercept British supply ships. From those modest beginnings, the Navy grew into the most powerful naval force in history. The 76mm yellow bronze format is the U.S. Mint's standard for large commemorative medals, providing a substantial display piece. The Navy Bicentennial celebration in 1975 coincided with the broader American Bicentennial preparations, giving the Navy's anniversary additional national prominence. The United States Mint's medal program has produced pieces honoring military heroes, presidents, Native American leaders, scientific achievements, and significant national events since the earliest days of the republic. The medal honors two centuries of naval service from John Paul Jones through the nuclear fleet.
