Description

This restrike of the Pennsylvania Bicentennial medal, originally issued in 1882, is a one-inch bronze version cataloged under the broader Pennsylvania Bicentennial medal family. The original 1882 medals commemorated the 200th anniversary of William Penn's founding of Pennsylvania in 1682, one of the most significant colonial enterprises in American history. Penn's "Holy Experiment" established principles of religious tolerance and representative government that influenced the Constitution a century later. This restrike, produced in the 1960s or later using original or copy dies, made the historic design available to a new generation of collectors. The small one-inch format was the most compact version of the Bicentennial medal, suitable for pocket carry or cabinet display. Restrikes of nineteenth-century medals are an important subcategory of American numismatics, preserving historic designs while creating distinct collectibles differentiated from originals by their composition, striking characteristics, and provenance.

Rarity Notes

One-inch bronze restrike of the 1882 original. Produced in later era. More available than original 1882 strikings but collected as a distinct variety.
