Description

This 1974 Franklin Mint bronze medal commemorates the 700th anniversary of Robert the Bruce, King of Scotland from 1306 to 1329. Robert the Bruce is one of Scotland's greatest national heroes, famous for leading Scotland to independence from England at the Battle of Bannockburn in 1314. The 700th anniversary of his birth (1274) prompted this Franklin Mint commemoration in 1974. The Franklin Mint's international historical subjects demonstrated its global scope and appeal to collectors interested in world history beyond American themes. Bronze composition was standard for historical figure commemoratives produced for the general collector market. Robert the Bruce medals have particular appeal to collectors of Scottish history, British medieval history, and the broader field of royal and noble portrait medals.
