Eisenhower facing left and the reverse displays an eagle landing on the moon with an olive branch in its talons, commemorating the Apollo 11 lunar landing. No 1973 Eisenhower dollars were released into circulation: the Philadelphia and Denver coins were sold only in mint sets, and 230,798 Philadelphia and 230,742 Denver pieces left unsold were melted. San Francisco's storied mint, born of the California Gold Rush, has evolved into the primary producer of U.S. proof coins.
