Description
This 1969 Franklin Mint medal commemorates the 200th anniversary of Captain James Cook's first Pacific voyage of discovery (1768-1771), during which he charted New Zealand and the eastern coast of Australia. Cook's voyages of exploration fundamentally changed European knowledge of the Pacific Ocean and its islands, and his cartographic achievements remain among the greatest in maritime history. The Franklin Mint produced this medal during the bicentennial celebrations of Cook's voyages, which were particularly significant in Australia, New Zealand, and the Pacific islands. Cook medals have been produced continuously since the eighteenth century and form a popular collecting specialty, with the Franklin Mint's contribution bringing modern production quality to this longstanding medallic tradition.
