This 1969 Franklin Mint medal commemorates the 200th anniversary of Captain James Cook's first Pacific voyage of discovery (1768-1771), during which he charted New Zealand and the eastern coast of Australia. Cook's voyages of exploration fundamentally changed European knowledge of the Pacific Ocean and its islands, and his cartographic achievements remain among the greatest in maritime history.
