Description
Designated RCD-1c-1969D-01 by Cuds on Coins and first published on May 1, 2019, this retained cud variety on the 1969-D Lincoln Memorial cent documents a die fragment that has broken free along its crack boundary yet remains captured within the die assembly — held in place by neighboring die steel or the collar — rather than falling away entirely. The result on struck coins is a raised, sometimes offset area that keeps its design, distinguishing it from a full cud (which strikes up as a blank lump) and from a pre-cud (where the fragment has cracked but is still part of the die). Retained cuds can be transitional: the die might continue striking dozens or hundreds of additional coins in this condition before the fragment dislodges, if it ever does. This is the first retained cud documented for the 1969-D Lincoln cent, with no cross-references to other attribution services established. The retained cud complements PC-1c-1969D-02 (the pre-cud listed separately in this catalog), together illustrating the progressive failure sequence that Denver dies experienced under the intense production volumes of 1969 — the facility's first full year of mint-marked cent production since 1964.
