Description

Among the most visually striking die failure varieties, a retained cud forms when a section of the die rim fractures but the broken fragment remains lodged in place rather than falling away. Each subsequent strike produces a raised, irregular area on the coin's rim where the displaced die metal transfers its distorted surface. On this 1966 Washington Quarter, the retained cud appears on the reverse, cataloged by Cuds on Coins as RCD-25c-1966-01R. Cross-referenced as WQC-66-7R-RET, the variety belongs to the Washington Clad and Silver Proof Quarters 1965-1998 series — the clad era that began in 1965 when rising silver prices forced the Mint to adopt copper-nickel clad planchets for the quarter denomination. The 1966 issue lacks a mintmark because the Mint temporarily suspended mintmarks from 1965 through 1967 in an effort to discourage hoarding during the coinage transition. Retained cuds are collected separately from full cuds (where the fragment falls away entirely), and the retention of the loose die piece creates a more complex surface, a raised area that still carries design, than the flat, smooth areas seen on standard cud errors.
