This is the doubled die obverse of the 1966 SMS Kennedy Half Dollar. The obverse design was impressed into the working die in two slightly different positions, so the die itself carries a doubled image and every coin struck from it shows the same doubling in the same place. The displacement is consistent in direction across the affected elements, and both images are fully formed and rounded. That is what distinguishes a true doubled die from machine doubling, which happens during the strike and leaves a flat shelf with no serifs. The 1966 SMS Kennedy Half Dollar - Doubled Die Obverse is a special strike half dollar struck at the Philadelphia Mint, part of the Kennedy Half Dollars Silver Clad 1965-1970 series. As a doubled die variety, the number of surviving examples is unknown. Doubled dies are produced when the die receives a second, misaligned impression during the hubbing process, creating a distinctive doubling effect visible on struck coins. The obverse features John F. Kennedy facing left, based on the presidential medal by Gilroy Roberts, while the reverse displays the Presidential Seal — a heraldic eagle with shield, olive branch, and arrows. Designed by Gilroy Roberts/Frank Gasparro. Struck in 40% silver, 60% copper, weighing 11.5 grams, 30.61 mm in diameter, with a reeded edge. Cataloged as PCGS #411639. The Kennedy Half Dollar was rushed into production in early 1964, just weeks after President Kennedy's assassination.
