The 1961 (D) Jefferson Nickel represents a Denver Mint issue from the Jefferson Nickels Original Design 1938-2003 series. The U.S. Mint produced 229.3 million examples, making this the higher-mintage of the two mint variants, representing 76% of production. The obverse features Thomas Jefferson facing left and the reverse displays Monticello, Thomas Jefferson's Virginia estate. Steady production from Philadelphia and Denver as the economy expanded. Coined at Denver's facility, which transitioned from processing Colorado gold rush metal to full-scale coin production in 1906.
