Documented by MadDieClashes as TDC-50c-1958-01, this typical die clash variety appears on the reverse of a 1958 Philadelphia Franklin half dollar, where clash marks are visible through the B of PLURIBUS and the M of UNUM. Die clashing occurs when the obverse and reverse dies strike each other without a planchet between them, transferring incuse impressions of each die's design onto the opposing die face. When the clashed dies subsequently strike planchets, these transferred impressions appear as faint raised shadows or outlines of design elements from the wrong side of the coin. John R. Sinnock's Franklin half dollar design, produced from 1948 through 1963, positions the reverse motto E PLURIBUS UNUM across the upper field where the adjacent obverse portrait elements — specifically features from Benjamin Franklin's profile — transfer during a clash event. The documentation notes an additional phenomenon visible through the second U of UNUM and below it: Progressive Indirect Design Transfer (PIDT), a secondary effect where repeated striking of clashed dies gradually builds up transferred design impressions over multiple production cycles, creating increasingly visible ghost images.
