Description

From the last year of S-mint circulation cent production, LDB4-1955S-018 records a BIE die break on the 1955-S Lincoln Wheat Cent with Hardy code 55S-4FL — a Front-Left positional classification within the B-E gap of LIBERTY. The Cohen Index has not listed this variety (NL status), and the additional break count remains pending final determination. The Front-Left designation places the fracture in the center-left zone of the gap between B and E, a positional sub-category that narrows attribution beyond the broader Front classification. San Francisco struck just 44.61 million Lincoln Wheat Cents in 1955 — the lowest S-mint circulation cent mintage of the decade and the final year San Francisco produced cents for general circulation. This small production run means fewer working dies were employed, making each documented variety from the 1955-S proportionally less common in the surviving population than comparable varieties from higher-mintage Philadelphia and Denver issues. The 1955 date is best known for the famous 1955 Doubled Die Obverse, which has kept collector attention focused on this year's varieties. Cataloged by Cuds on Coins.
