Description
Bearing the high sequence number of -22, this retained cud demonstrates that the 1955 Philadelphia Mint Lincoln Wheat Cent has been one of the most extensively documented dates for die break varieties. While 1955 is famous for the dramatic doubled die obverse, this retained cud represents an entirely different category of die failure. A retained cud forms when a section of the die rim fractures and breaks loose but is held in place, producing a raised area that keeps its design rather than a clean, smooth blob. Notably, this variety also exhibits a reverse die chip on the letter T in CENT — a secondary die deterioration feature that adds another point of attribution interest. RCD-1c-1955-22 is cataloged in the Cuds on Coins reference system. The 1955 Lincoln Wheat Cent was struck at the Philadelphia Mint in bronze (95% copper, 5% tin and zinc). No additional cross-references have been recorded. The high sequence number indicates at least twenty-two distinct retained cud dies have been cataloged for the 1955 date, reflecting both production volume and study intensity.
