RCD-1c-1955-03 Retained Cud

Description

The third obverse retained cud cataloged for the 1955 Philadelphia Lincoln Wheat Cent, RCD-1c-1955-03 is cross-referenced as JCc-55_246 in the Jim Caldwell catalog. Like its companion RCD-1c-1955-02, this variety bears no "R" suffix, confirming the fracture occurred on the obverse die bearing Lincoln's portrait. Obverse retained cuds are less common than reverse examples, partly because quality control more readily retired dies with visible portrait-side defects. That two obverse cuds from the same date carry Caldwell cross-references (JCc-55_170 and JCc-55_246) confirms both were independently verified. The 1955 Philadelphia cent operates under the long shadow of the famous 1955 Doubled Die Obverse, which generated collector awareness so intense that virtually every die anomaly from this date has been documented.
