Description
Sixth BIE die break documented at Hardy position 4 for the 1955 Denver Mint Lincoln Wheat Cent, cross-referenced as Cohen 55D-B506 (marked as "Possible") and Hardy 55D-4FL+, this variety was cataloged on July 19, 2015. The "Possible" notation on the Cohen reference indicates that the attribution to Cohen's catalog entry B506 is tentative rather than confirmed, while Hardy 55D-4FL+ provides a definitive positional classification. The 1955-D date carries particular numismatic significance because the 1955 Philadelphia doubled die obverse — one of the most famous error coins in American numismatics — has drawn intense scrutiny to all 1955-dated cents, though this BIE is a different type of variety entirely. BIE die breaks form from vertical cracks in the die between B and E of LIBERTY that fill with metal during striking, producing a raised bar on the coin surface. Six documented BIEs at position 4 from the 1955-D date reflects the substantial Denver Mint production of Wheat Cents during the series' final years. Cataloged by Cuds on Coins, this variety contributes to the dense network of die break documentation that covers the entire Wheat Cent series from 1909 through 1958.
