Description

Continuing the well-documented pattern of die failures for the 1953-S Lincoln Wheat Cent, RCD-1c-1953S-09R is attributed by Cuds on Coins as the ninth retained cud variety for this penultimate San Francisco cent date. A retained cud differs from a simple die crack or a full cud in one critical respect: the broken die fragment neither stays fully intact nor separates completely, but instead remains partially attached and partially displaced within the die cavity. This intermediate state creates coins bearing a raised, uneven mass that carries faint remnants of the original design — a visual signature that distinguishes retained cuds from both minor die cracks and fully detached cuds. The 1953-S cent was produced from planchets of 95% copper and 5% zinc, and San Francisco's diminishing role in cent production through the 1950s meant that fewer total dies were employed, yet those dies were evidently worked hard enough to generate numerous break varieties. With at least eleven documented retained cuds for the 1953-S issue, collectors have a rich field of varieties to pursue from a date that occupies a poignant position near the end of San Francisco's Wheat Cent legacy.
