Victor David Brenner's wheat ears reverse, flanking ONE CENT with E PLURIBUS UNUM above, was approaching its final years when San Francisco struck approximately 128.8 million cents in 1953 — a substantial production run requiring numerous working die pairs. Pre-cuds capture the incipient stage of die failure where a crack has begun to develop near the rim but the die steel remains structurally connected, producing a raised, slightly irregular area on struck coins rather than the dramatic displaced metal mass of a full retained cud. Eight documented reverse pre-cuds for the 1953-S date indicates multiple reverse dies developed independent rim fractures during the production run, each representing a separate working die that experienced stress-induced cracking at its periphery.
