Description

Otto Oddehon of St. Louis issued this medal privately in 1953 for the 150th anniversary of the Louisiana Purchase, after talk of staging another world's fair that year came to nothing and he could find no one to join him; Hibler and Kappen record that he went ahead alone as a patriotic gesture. The Adams Co. struck it, and the copper pieces sold for fifty cents. A knight on horseback rides across the obverse with 1803 and 1953 at upper right and Oddehon's maker-and-distributor credit under the horse, inside the legend "Commemorating the Sesquicentennial of the Louisiana Purchase." The reverse is an outline map of North America marking the purchase, with an incuse dot for St. Louis. HK-509 is copper, 41 mm; brass, silver-plated and bronze versions are HK-509a, HK-509b and HK-509c.
