1944-S Doubled Die Reverse WDDR-001
Error
Description
Cross-referenced as Crawford CDDR-001, CONECA 1-R-VI, and Wexler 1944-S 50¢ WDDR-001, this Walking Liberty Half Dollar doubled die reverse is one of the most authoritatively documented varieties in the series. Adolph Weinman's 90% silver design is widely regarded as one of the most beautiful American coin designs produced. On WDDR-001 the doubling is strong and broadly distributed: extra thickness from multiple hubbings shows across UNITED STATES OF AMERICA, HALF DOLLAR, E PLURIBUS UNUM, the separator dots, and the branch. The obverse carries a die scratch south-southwest to north-northeast above the leaves east-southeast of the R in LIBERTY, and a short scratch north-northeast from the top right of WE. The reverse markers include a die gouge below the T in UNITED; a gouge below the first A in AMERICA; and a gouge between the feathers above the initials. Three cross-references and three precise reverse die markers make WDDR-001 readily attributable.
