Description
The 1944 (S) Philippine Centavo, struck at the San Francisco Mint, is part of the Philippines Centavos 1903-1945 collection. From 1937 the reverse carried the arms of the Commonwealth of the Philippines, taken from the Commonwealth seal designed by Ambrosio Morales, while Figueroa's seated figure stayed on the obverse. The Manila Mint struck these centavos from 1937 to 1941 with an M beside the date; with Manila under Japanese occupation, the 1944 coinage came from the San Francisco Mint and carries an S. The Mint's report gives the alloy of these centavos as 95 percent copper and 5 percent zinc. The Director of the Mint's report lists 58,000,000 pieces struck for the Philippines in calendar year 1944. Catalogue numbers: KM-179. PCGS number 90183.
