1943 Atypical Die Clash ADC-10C-1943-01
Error
Description
Documented by MadDieClashes as ADC-10c-1943-01, this atypical die clash was identified on the 1943 Winged Liberty (Mercury) dime — and the original cataloger specifically noted the coin displays a "crisp, unabraded, strong die clash" with an overlay diagram showing the approximate die positions at the moment of contact. The specimen resides in the collection of Tom Koolick. Atypical die clashes differ from typical clashes in their mechanism: while both result from dies striking each other without a planchet, atypical clashes involve dies that contact at an abnormal angle, rotation, or offset, producing transferred design impressions in unexpected positions. Adolph A. Weinman's Mercury dime design — featuring a youthful Liberty wearing a winged Phrygian cap on the obverse and a Roman fasces with olive branch on the reverse — provides highly recognizable design elements whose transferred impressions can be definitively identified even when appearing in displaced positions. The "crisp, unabraded, strong" characterization indicates this specimen preserves the clash marks in exceptional condition, without the post-clash die polishing or subsequent die wear that can diminish clash mark visibility on later-struck specimens. Philadelphia struck Mercury dimes in 1943 during World War II, a period of intense mint production across all denominations to support the wartime economy. The inclusion of an overlay diagram in the original documentation provides researchers with a visual reconstruction of the die misalignment, showing exactly how the obverse and reverse dies were oriented relative to each other when they clashed — information that helps explain why specific design elements appear in their observed positions on the coin. Collectors examining this type of clash variety should compare the transferred design elements against the overlay to understand the rotational geometry of the clash event.
