Description

Sixth documented retained cud on the reverse of a 1941 San Francisco Mint Lincoln Wheat Cent, this variety is cross-referenced as LC-41S-17R Ret in the Lincoln Cent reference system, with a secondary reference notation dated 07/22/2018 in the Cuds on Coins catalog. A retained cud forms when a section of the die rim cracks but the fractured piece remains in position, producing a raised area on the struck coin that retains partial design detail — unlike a full cud where the separated fragment leaves a cavity that fills with a completely featureless raised mass. The LC-41S-17R "Ret" cross-reference indicates this was previously documented as a retained variety within the broader Lincoln Cent die break catalog, and the "17R" number suggests it was the seventeenth reverse die break variety known for the 1941-S date before being separately cataloged by Cuds on Coins.
