1939 So-Called Dollar HK-1033, Charbneau Platinum Dollar
Strike TypeCoin Details
Description
Platinum sets HK-1033 apart from the rest of Jules Louis Charbneau's Golden Gate series. It uses the reverse without any lettering below or beside Pacifica's head, the die also used for the gilt copper HK-490 and the copper HK-1033a. The obverse shows the 1939 exposition's tower and grounds with the bridge beyond and the fair's shortened name around the edge, and the tiny initials C M J sit at the obverse border. Charbneau, a San Francisco fine arts appraiser and dealer, made the series in the size of a gold dollar and sold it during the fair's 1939 and 1940 seasons. Pacifica, whose face fills the reverse, was the fair's queen, taken from her statue at the Cavalcade of the Golden West entrance. The listing gives no diameter or date for this number on its own.
