Description
A tiny "10K" at the lower right of the reverse identifies HK-1032, the gold version of Connecticut's 1926 medal for the Sesquicentennial Exposition. The state presented its gold pieces to heads of governments, gave silver ones (HK-455) to important guests, and sold the bronze (HK-456) at its building on the Philadelphia grounds and at the State Library in Hartford for fifty cents, or seventy-five by mail. The medal honored Nathan Hale, the patriot executed as a spy in 1776, on the 150th anniversary of his death, and the opening of the Connecticut State Building, which fills the obverse. The reverse shows Hale's statue, the state seal and the words he is remembered for. George S. Godard designed it, and Whitehead & Hoag Co., whose name is microscopic at the left rim, struck it. Gold, 38 mm.
