1939-S Doubled Die Obverse WDDO-001
Error
Description
A Class V CW spread from a pivot at about 8:00 shows doubling on IGWT, BERTY of LIBERTY, acorns and leaves below the R of LIBERTY, the curl of the flag below the B of LIBERTY, the stars behind the head, the top of the head, the right side collar and elements of the upper gown at the right side shoulder. Die Markers: Obverse Stage A: E/W die gouge between the first and third fingers. Die gouge (dot) to the right of the lower curve of the 3 in the date. Obverse Stage B: Die markers still present but weaker. The doubling on the letters of LIBERTY is slightly abraded and less distinguishable. Reverse Stage A: Curling die gouge between the eagle's tail feathers and the left upper side of the designer's initials. Reverse Stage B: Die gouge much weaker and only covers the top of the W in the designer's initials.
