1939 Doubled Die Obverse WDDO-006
Error
Description
Strong Class VI extra thickness characterizes this proof Mercury Dime doubled die obverse, visible on the date and Adolph Weinman's designer initials, with additional extra thickness on IN GOD WE TRVST and slight thickening on LIBERTY. Attributed by the Wexler Team under Wexler Variety ID 1939 10c Pr WDDO-006, the "Pr" designation confirms this as a proof strike. Obverse die markers include light rotational die scratches on the neck and throughout the head, plus a short, nearly horizontal die scratch near the bottom of the neck. On the reverse, short, nearly vertical die scratches appear below the second A in AMERICA. The 1939 proof Mercury Dime was struck at the Philadelphia Mint during the final years of Weinman's Winged Liberty Head design, which concluded in 1945. Proof doubled die obverses from the Mercury Dime series are particularly desirable because proof production numbers were limited, and Class VI extra thickness on proof surfaces stands out sharply against the mirror-like fields.
