1935 Doubled Die Reverse WDDR-004

Description

Cataloged by the Wexler Team as 1935 5-cent WDDR-004, this Buffalo Nickel variety exhibits strong spread to the northwest on the L in PLURIBUS and slightly on the back of the left rear leg of the American Bison on James Earle Fraser's reverse. The NW directional spread means the secondary hub impression displaced upward and to the left, with maximum visibility concentrated on the single letter L — a remarkably localized pickup point. The slight involvement of the bison's left rear leg adds a sculptural-relief element, where the doubling follows the curved contour of the animal's hindquarter rather than flat lettering. Fraser's iconic reverse depicts a standing bison (modeled after Black Diamond from the Central Park Zoo), and the rear legs are among the highest-relief elements, making even slight displacement detectable. No significant die markers have been documented on either obverse or reverse. The 1935 Buffalo Nickel was struck at the Philadelphia Mint in copper-nickel composition. Examine the L in PLURIBUS under 7x magnification for the strong NW displacement, then inspect the back of the bison's left rear leg for slight confirming spread.
