Description

Among the more visually impressive Buffalo Nickel doubled die reverses, the 1935 DDR-002 displays strong extra thickness on UNITED STATES OF AMERICA with oval dots accompanying the doubling, along with extra thickness on E PLURIBUS UNUM. Cataloged by VarietyVista under UVC-139 and DMR-004, the variety's strength is notable relative to many Buffalo Nickel varieties, where high-relief design elements often obscure subtle hub doubling. Three die states are documented: Stage A in Early Die State, Stage B in Mid Die State (unconfirmed), and Stage C in Late Die State (unconfirmed). The oval dots within the doubled lettering on UNITED STATES OF AMERICA are a characteristic sometimes seen when thick-spread doubling creates discrete secondary impressions rather than continuous spread. James Earle Fraser's bold high-relief design was in its penultimate full year of production in 1935, and doubled die varieties from this date document die preparation methods as the series approached its conclusion. Philadelphia's 1935 mintage exceeded fifty-eight million pieces, providing a substantial population from which researchers identified this variety.
