1930 Doubled Die Obverse DDO-006

Description

Listed in the Cherry Pickers' Guide as FS-103, this 1930 Buffalo Nickel doubled die obverse exhibits very strong spread to the northwest on the eyelid, brow, nostril, and lower vertical feather of the Native American portrait. VarietyVista catalogs this variety as UVC-110 with die marker reference DMR-007. Three die stages have been documented: Stage A in Early Die State where both obverse and reverse show EDS characteristics, Stage B in Mid Die State with both sides in MDS condition, and Stage C in Late Die State which remains unconfirmed. The strength of the northwest spread on multiple facial features makes DDO-006 one of the more dramatic doubled dies for 1930 — the eyelid and brow doubling is particularly prominent because these raised elements sit against the open field of the Native American's profile, allowing the secondary impression to cast visible shadows under magnification.
