1929-S Doubled Die Obverse WDDO-001

Description

Attributed by the Wexler Team and cross-referenced as CONECA 1-O-II and Cherrypickers FS-10-1929S-101 (010.3), this 1929-S Mercury Dime presents a very strong eastward spread on IN GOD WE TRUST and the date. The Cherrypickers listing confirms its significance as a variety worthy of premium recognition among series specialists. Class II hub doubling produced the eastward displacement, creating clearly separated secondary impressions on the motto and date that are among the most dramatic for the Mercury Dime series. San Francisco struck 4.73 million dimes in 1929, a moderate output that makes the date available but not common. Composed of 90% silver and 10% copper, Mercury Dimes of this era represent the later period of Adolph Weinman's Winged Liberty Head design, which had been in production since 1916. The strong doubling on both the motto and the date provides multiple points of confirmation for attribution, making WDDO-001 identifiable without advanced magnification equipment by experienced collectors. Die Markers: Obverse: Strong die clash marks show to the left of the profile. A small die gouge can be found below the E in WE. A die crack runs from the bonnet to the rim to the left of the T in LIBERTY. Reverse: Numerous N/S die scratches run through the left branches and leaves. A die gouge can be found below the I in AMERICA.
