Description

Note: 1921-P VAM-1BA was eliminated in March 2023 as a duplicate of 1921-P VAM-1Z and no longer stands as an independent variety in the VAM reference. At the time of its listing, VAM-1BA carried the attribution Scribbing Die Scratches — the official VAM name with the documented spelling — under the designation 1BA IV – D1a (page 189). The reverse, D1a, showed fine scribbling die scratches across the reverse field in various directions, consistent with die polishing applied after a clash event to remove transferred design impressions. A die chip at the rim above the RI of AMERICA was the reverse die marker. Discovery was attributed to Brian Raines (possibly) in 2013. The scribbling scratch pattern results from abrasive polishing of the die face — a standard Mint procedure after clashing. VAM-1BA's elimination into VAM-1Z reflects ongoing attribution research that consolidates listings when shared die identity is confirmed. The 1921 Morgan Dollar was the final year of original production, struck in 90% silver at Philadelphia.
