Description
A proof dime pattern with dual catalog references J-1794 and 1983, representing another die pairing or striking variant within the Mercury dime evaluation series. The proliferation of dual-numbered dime patterns from 1916 reflects the thorough evaluation process that preceded the adoption of Weinman's design for production. Chief Engraver Charles Barber, who had designed the outgoing Barber dime in 1892 and served as Chief Engraver since 1879, was responsible for translating Weinman's sculptural models into working dies — a task complicated by the natural tension between an outside artist's vision and the practical requirements of high-speed coinage production. Barber was reportedly resistant to the redesign of his own coin types and was less than fully cooperative in preparing dies from Weinman's models, a dynamic that generated friction between the Mint and the Commission of Fine Arts. Multiple pattern strikings allowed the Commission to verify that the die preparation faithfully represented Weinman's original intent. The catalog number 1983 distinguishes this particular die combination or metal composition from the other J-1794 variants.
Rarity Notes
