Description
A dual-numbered proof dime pattern from the 1916 Mercury dime design evaluation, bearing both the traditional Judd catalog number J-1794 and the alternative reference number 1981. The dual numbering connects this proof striking to the business-strike J-1981, suggesting they share the same die combination but differ in striking format: proof versus business strike. This pairing was standard Mint practice, allowing direct comparison between how a design appeared under the careful, individual striking of proof production and the faster, higher-volume process of business strike production. Weinman's Mercury dime design presented particular production challenges because of its relatively high relief for a ten-cent coin. The delicate wing feathers on Liberty's cap and the fine detail of the fasces rods on the reverse required sharp, well-maintained dies and carefully controlled striking pressure. By examining the same die pairing in both proof and business strike formats, the Mint could assess whether Weinman's design details would survive the transition from artistic ideal to commercial reality. The proof version preserves the full crispness of the die work that business strikes might soften.
Rarity Notes
R-7 (Extremely Rare). Dual-numbered proof dime patterns are individually very scarce.
