Description

HK-428 is the gilt version of the official medal of the Panama-California Exposition, the fair San Diego held through 1915 and 1916 in City Park, now Balboa Park. C. K. Berryman, cartoonist for the Washington Evening Star, designed it and C. E. Barber engraved it, and the Mint coined it at its display in the park. The obverse shows Uncle Sam with a pick over his shoulder and a shovel whose handle lies across the canal, two continents behind him; Hibler and Kappen say no other official exposition medal made Uncle Sam its central figure. The reverse shows a ship in the canal with "Panama Canal Opened by S.S. Ancon Aug. 15, 1914." Silver and bronze 1915 pieces are HK-426 and HK-427, and the medal was struck again dated 1916. This piece is gilt, 34 mm.
