Description

San Diego's exposition ran through all of 1915 and then, from January 1, 1916 to midnight on January 1, 1917, for a second year, and the official medal was struck for both. HK-430 is the bronze piece dated 1916. On the obverse Uncle Sam, seen at full length and turned partly right, holds a pick over his right shoulder and a shovel in his left hand, two continents behind him and the shovel's handle laid across the canal; the legend gives the exposition's name and San Diego. The reverse, under "Official Souvenir," shows a ship passing through the canal and records its opening by the S.S. Ancon on August 15, 1914. Hibler and Kappen say no other official exposition medal, before or after, made Uncle Sam its central figure. 34 mm; the 1915 bronze is HK-427.
