About This Coin
The 1908 Philippine Five Centavos is a United States cent from the Philippines Five Centavos 1903-1945 series. The obverse features a male figure seated beside a hammer and anvil, while the reverse displays an eagle above a shield. Designed by Melecio Figueroa. Struck in copper-nickel. The Philippine Five Centavos followed the same design family as other Philippine denominations, struck at the Manila Mint (M mintmark), San Francisco (S), and Denver (D). The composition changed from copper-nickel to copper-zinc-nickel during WWII. Pre-war Manila Mint strikes are less common in high grade than U.S.-struck wartime issues.
