Description
Judd-1778 in the sans serif edge variety is a proof double eagle pattern from the 1907 Saint-Gaudens series, distinguished by its edge lettering rendered in a sans serif typeface rather than the serif lettering used on other variants. The edge of Saint-Gaudens' double eagle bears the motto E PLURIBUS UNUM in raised letters, and the choice between serif and sans serif letterforms was one of several design variables tested during the extensive 1907 experimental program. Sans serif lettering produces cleaner, more modern-looking characters without the small decorative strokes at the ends of each letter. The obverse displays Saint-Gaudens' striding Liberty design with torch and olive branch, while the reverse shows the eagle soaring above a radiant sun. Edge lettering on the double eagle was applied by a separate collar die during the striking process, and the Mint tested multiple edge configurations to determine which produced the sharpest, most legible results at production speed. This sans serif variant represents one approach that was ultimately not selected for the final production design, which employed serif lettering on the edge.
