Description

Gilding sets HK-332a apart from the bronze HK-332, both 38 mm U.S. Government Building pieces from the Lewis and Clark Centennial Exposition held at Portland in 1905. Like the rest of the Government Building group they were private souvenirs, not the fair's official medal, which was struck in the Mint exhibit on the grounds. The obverse joins the two explorers' busts, facing left under "Lewis and Clark," with a rifle, oar and telescope crossed below; the reverse shows the Government Building with Portland, Oregon, beneath and "Centennial Exposition" around the edge, all within beaded borders. Farran Zerbe, who ran the numismatic display at the fair, also handled the sale of the Lewis and Clark commemorative gold dollars and medals there. The exposition drew official representation from sixteen nations. Gilt bronze, 38 mm.
