Description

This 1905 so-called dollar (HK-330) commemorates U.S. Government Building. The Louisiana Purchase Exposition produced the famous Jefferson and McKinley gold commemorative dollars — the first U.S. commemorative gold coins — alongside numerous so-called dollar varieties in silver and base metals. The bronze composition of this piece reflects the medallic tradition dating to classical antiquity. Bronze so-called dollars typically survive in better condition than white metal examples due to the alloy's greater hardness and durability. Official exposition medals were struck alongside the landmark Jefferson and McKinley gold dollars. Private manufacturers produced additional commemorative pieces sold to the 19.7 million fairgoers. George Morgan, famous for his Liberty Head silver dollar design, also contributed to exposition medal production during his long tenure at the U.S. Mint.
