Description

HK-330 is the gilt bronze member of the 34 mm U.S. Government Building group from the 1905 Lewis and Clark Centennial Exposition at Portland, Oregon, issued alongside an antiqued silver-plated piece (HK-328) and a plain bronze (HK-329). Hibler and Kappen state plainly that these were not official exposition medals. Its organizing company was chartered late in 1901 with a long title that joined the centennial to an American Pacific exposition and an Oriental fair; when the permanent body was set up in January 1902 the name was cut back to the Lewis & Clark Centennial Exposition Co.; Oregon and Congress both contributed funds, and stock was sold to the public. The obverse shows the explorers' joined busts with a rifle, oar and telescope crossed beneath, and the reverse shows the Government Building, with the city and state named below it.
