1905 Doubled Die Reverse WDDR-001

Description

Attributed by the Wexler Team and submitted by Kevin Flynn, this 1905 Indian Head Cent doubled die reverse displays a Class II spread toward center on leaves and veins on the left side and slightly on the upper right wreath. A short die crack extends east from the lower right O in ONE on the reverse, providing a secondary die marker. On the obverse, a die scratch connects the tops of the T and E in UNITED, serving as an additional identifier. Cross-referenced as F.IND.ERS FND-001, this variety can be attributed from the description and photographs on page 173 of the 1995 book The F.IND.ERS Report by Larry R. Steve and Kevin J. Flynn, one of the foundational references for Indian Head Cent die varieties. Cataloged as Wexler 1905 1-cent WDDR-001, this is the first documented doubled die reverse for the 1905 date. The Indian Head Cent series, designed by James Barton Longacre and struck from 1859 through 1909, remains a cornerstone of American numismatics. Photos are needed for this variety. Class II hub doubling results from rotation of the hub relative to the die between impressions.
