Description

HK-331b is the aluminum member of the 37 mm group of U.S. Government Building dollars from the 1905 Lewis and Clark Centennial Exposition in Portland, struck from dies similar to those of the 34 mm HK-328. The obverse joins the busts of the two captains, facing left beneath their names, over a crossed rifle, oar and telescope, with "Centennial 1905 Exposition" around. The reverse shows the government building across the middle, with "Portland, Oregon" below it. Hibler and Kappen note that the earliest pieces of this design were not official issues of the fair. The 37 mm dies were also used for bronze with a reeded edge (HK-331) and gilt bronze (HK-331a). The fair filled nearly 200 acres of Willamette Heights around Guild's Lake, open from the first of June to mid-October 1905. Aluminum, 37 mm.
