Description

The U.S. Government Building at Portland's 1905 Lewis and Clark Centennial Exposition appears across the reverse of HK-329, a bronze medal of 34 mm, with "Lewis & Clark" at the top, Portland, Oregon, under the building and "Centennial Exposition" around the bottom edge. The obverse joins the busts of Lewis and Clark above a crossed rifle, oar and telescope, tools of their expedition. Federal displays at the fair included a Mint exhibit, and Farran Zerbe supervised its numismatic display. Congress gave money for the exposition but did not authorize the President to invite foreign governments, so the company's invitations went through the State Department to foreign exhibitors who were then at St. Louis in 1904, and sixteen nations sent exhibits. The silver-plated and gilt bronze strikings of this design are HK-328 and HK-330.
