Description

For years the only Lewis and Clark Exposition medals in the catalogues were two U.S. Government Building pieces, and Hibler and Kappen point out that they were never official issues. HK-328 is the antiqued silver-plated one, 34 mm. Its obverse shows the two explorers' busts overlapping, facing left, with "Lewis and Clark" above and a crossed rifle, oar and telescope under the busts, and "Centennial 1905 Exposition" around the bottom inside a beaded border. The reverse shows the Government Building across the middle, captioned in small letters as the U. S. Government Bldg., with Portland, Oregon, below. The 1905 fair celebrated a hundred years since Captains Meriwether Lewis and William Clark explored the Louisiana Territory and the Oregon Country. The same dies were used in bronze (HK-329) and gilt bronze (HK-330).
