Description

HK-327 is the plain bronze striking of the official Lewis and Clark Centennial Exposition medal, made in the Mint exhibit at the 1905 Portland fair. Its reverse is a map of the Pacific coast from British Columbia down to San Francisco, crossed by named trade routes heading west, with the words Pacific Ocean set vertically, all in a central circle; around it runs "Westward the Course of Empire Takes Its Way," and "Portland Oregon 1905" sits below. The obverse scene, titled "Sighting the Pacific 1805," shows three walking figures turned toward the sea. Hibler and Kappen note that an earlier cataloguer, Kenney, left these official medals out for reasons no one knows. The exposition ran from June 1 to October 14, 1905. Bronze, 34 mm; the silver is HK-325 and the gold-plated bronze HK-326.
