Description

President Theodore Roosevelt faces the viewer on HK-308, a silver proof of the 1904 Louisiana Purchase Exposition with "Pres. Theo. Roosevelt" curving above his bust inside a beaded border. The reverse pictures the Hall of Festivals and the Central Cascades with their grounds, lettered "Exposition St. Louis 1904." Incused in microscopic letters on the edge is the word "Silber" with .990, which Hibler and Kappen suggest was meant to signal silver of that fineness. Festival Hall stood at the center of the fair, the fifteen great exhibition palaces fanning out from it among lagoons and fountains. Roosevelt had attended the dedication ceremonies on April 30, 1903, a year before the delayed opening. The medal is silver, 38 mm.
