Description

Gilt pieces of the official Louisiana Purchase Exposition souvenir, HK-304, cost twenty-five cents at the fair in 1904, the same as plain bronze, while gold plate brought fifty cents and silver a dollar or more. The medals were struck on the grounds in the Mint exhibit, part of an extensive federal display. Napoleon and Jefferson share the obverse, framed by "Louisiana Purchase Exposition" and "Official Souvenir"; the reverse maps the territory bought in 1803, with its area and cost, above "St. Louis 1904." States and foreign nations alike put up scores of buildings of their own on the grounds. Besides these official pieces, the exposition gave rise to private medals of every kind. Gilt, 33 mm.
