Description

Octagonal pieces such as HK-306 were the second phase of the Souvenir Coin of Admission. After the round version had sold for a time, the Louisiana Purchase Souvenir Coin Co. placed a large order for an eight-sided form, but at about the same time the firm vanished, having won neither official recognition nor a concession at the 1904 exposition. Souvenir and coin dealers bought up the octagonal stock. These pieces carry serial numbers above 25,000 in the oval seal on the reverse, the round ones numbers below it. The design is unchanged: crowned bust with 1803 and 1903 on the front, and on the back the map, eagle and seated women. Brass, 33 mm by 33 mm; the version without a serial is HK-307.
