Description

Yellow bronze proved a poor choice for the official souvenir of the Louisiana Purchase Exposition: Hibler and Kappen report that it tarnished quickly and was replaced by plain bronze, listed as HK-303. HK-302 is that first yellow bronze striking, sold for twenty-five cents at the Mint exhibit on the St. Louis grounds in 1904. The design shows Napoleon and Jefferson in conjoined busts with "Official Souvenir" below, and on the reverse the purchase territory across a relief map of the nation. On August 20, 1901, President McKinley had invited every country to join the exposition and show America's progress since the purchase, and all the states and territories and dozens of foreign nations took part.
